Todays Cinema - Underworld: Blood Wars

This is the fifth and latest, installment in the popular Underworld film franchise. Unfortunately, this is also a convoluted mess that lacks a decent story as as a good director.

Even the fight scenes, which the previous installments were known for, are now too long drawn out and tiresome.
Following up from the mediocre from fourth movie, Underworld: Awakening, vampire death dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) struggles emotionally as she tries to come to terms with the fact that she may never see her daughter, Eve, or her ex-lover, Michaael, again.

Also, she hints aat being prepared to die after walking the Earth for 1000 years. Nevertheless, she first has to contend with a stronger and more unified group of Lycans, now led by the fireband Marius (Tobias Menzies)

Marius desperately wants to find  Eve as he believes the child's blood (she is a vampire-Lycan hybrid) is the key to making the Lycans stronger. There is also a power play within the vampire coven, with the ambitious Semira (Pulver) trying to gain control of everyone with help from her manipulative lover, Varga (Bradley James).

There is even a vampire coven high in the mountains that our heroine and her ally, David (James), visit. This Nordic coven will remind you of set from the Game of Thrones, with many of its inhabitants resembling Daenerys Targaryn.

And if you're a fan of the series, there is some sort of of closure for certain characters and an element of a new beginning for others. If you had any hope that this series would end with this movie, you can forget about it, as it is apparent here that the filmmakers are going to milk this tired franchise as long as they can.

All in all, this is only for fans who still find this movie genre fascinating.
  • Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James and Lara Pulver
  • Director: Anna Foersster
  • E-value: 3
  • Acting: 4
  • Plot: 4

Todays Cinema - Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them

Fantastic of the Harry Potter book series (and movies) will recall that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander is a book given by Albus Dumbledore to Harry, and when Rowling published it, fans discovered it was essentially a book discovered it was essentially a book given by Albus Dumbledore to Harry, and when Rowling published it, fans discovered it was essentially a book describing various magical creatures.

The movie is about the fictional author of the book, 'magizoologist' Newt (played brilliantly by Redmayne). The story begins with Newt arriving New York with a faulty briefcase that houses some mysterious creatures.

One escapes and during the process to capture it, he encounters Jacob (Fogler) who hopes to get a bank loan to open his own bakery. Jacobs ends up exposed to the world of magic thanks of Newt.

Their antics are observed by Tina (Waterston), who was demoted from her position as security officer at the Magical Congress of the United States of America (Macusa).

She hopes  to change all that by bringing in Newt as his creatures threaten to expose the magical world to ordinary people.

That plan backfires due to Newt and Jacob accidentally switching briefcases and Jacob inadverttently releasing more of the creatures.

Newt and Jacob together with Tina and Tina's mind-reading sister Queenie (Alison Sudol) team up find the creatures but end up realizing that they are facing a danger far greater than any of Newt's creatures.

The movie is filled with interesting characters including Macusa operative Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) who seems to have his own agenda, a witch-hating activist Mary Lou Barebone (Samantha Morton) and her abused son Credence (Ezra Miller, who all have solid parts in the film.

The creatures (all CGI) are magnificent, the story is good and by mentioning some characters from the world of Harry Potter, you feel a connection to this new movie franchise.

Redmayne makes Newt likeable and relateable even when he is awkward. Thanks to an interesting lead and amazing worlds created in this movie, trust me you will want to watch the sequel.

Don't forget to watch this awesome movie at your nearest cinema!
  • Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston and Dan Fogler.
  • Director: David Yates

A Girl's Guide to High Heels

Did you know that 25% of your bones are located in your foot? and women are four times more likely to experience foot problems than men? Shopping for your first proper walking shoes should be done be you. It's crucial for you to figure out which shoes work best for you.

There are many aspects for you to consider when it comes to purchase high heels,, from design to comfort as well as size! Sometimes, beauty does not have to be painful. It's all coming from you. So, without further ado, let's see the tips below:

1. Make sure it fits perfectly. Yes maybe it's the most common tip but the key is that your shoes should fit the size of your feet. This is because every walking step you take exerts pressure up to three times your body weight on your feet.

2. Your feet should feel supported and balanced when you have on your heels. Stiletto is ideal for you because it balances your weight evenly from heel to the toe. But please, avoid stiletto heels that don't provide support okay!

3.  When buying shoes, make sure they feel good and have enough room for your toes. Open toed shoes allow your toes to relax naturally without making it overlap each other. But if you prefer to wear closed toe shoes, be sure that there's enough room in your shoes around the toes - about the width of your thumb so you won't harm your feet.

4. If unusual wear high shoes, start with a low heel first. Practice, practice and practice!
If you're not used to walking in high heels, it'll make you feel very unnatural. You can absolutely start with a lower heel. Walking in high heels take practice. You can practice wearing your heels around the house. Feel the art of walking in high heels.

5. Sky high heels are sexier than shorter styles, but there's no use if you do not know how to walk in high heels.

6. Do not be fooled by the expensive brands. The label is not everything. Even if you love the brand, but if it does not fit, you probably will not wear it.

So girls! Remember that it is always important to allow your feet to rest after wearing high heels. Don't make them suffer. It's time to say "Yes!" to comfort.

Deepavali around the world

Deepavali or also known as Diwali is a crucial Hindu festival celebrated during the month of Kartika (October-November). It is a five-day festival celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all over the world. The actual day of Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the festival’s third day, which this year falls on October 29, Saturday.

Deepa means “light” while Avali means “row”. According to Chandra (2001), Deepavali is the celebration of the victorious return of Lord Rama together with his consort, Sita to the kingdom of Ayodhya, after the elimination Ravana, King of Ceylon or Sri Lanka in the 15th century BC where the main theme is the triumph of light over darkness as well as good over evil.

During the celebration, people light rows of small candles or oil lamps along balconies and windows to welcome Lord Rama and Sita home. The glow of lights, whether vilakku (oil lamps fashioned out clay), or colourful electric bulbs, brighten up the house of both rich and poor to signify Deepavali is about to come.

Just so you know, the houses of the Hindu devotees as well as their surrounding areas will be cleaned up, from top to bottom days before the celebration. The entrances of Hindu devotees home will be decorated with the kolam, a form of design or pattern drawn with rice flour on the flour with bare fingers using predetermined dots, as a signifier of religious belief.

In additional to that, Deepavali is also considered a festival to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu and Goddess of Wealth. A special Goddess Lakhshmi Pooja is performed in most Hindu homes and people visit friends and exchange sweets and gifts. There is also a strong belief, in giving food and goods to those in need. It is also traditional for homes to be cleaned and new clothes to be worn at the the Deepavali festival.

When it comes to food, it features with various rich savoury and sweet dishes which come in a variety of fascinating colors and flavors. Families usually will prepare food at home for guests arrive to exchange gifts as well as watch fireworks. Although most devout Hindus tend to be vegetarian, but that doesn't change the fact that Deepavali is the day to enjoy the many delectable Indian delicacies like sweetmeats, rice puddings, murukku and yeah, the so famous mutton and chicken curry that can be eaten with the thosai or putu mayam.

On Deepavali morning, many Hindu devoteed have to get up early before sunrise apply oil on their heads and take a bath. They put on new clothes. Then, they go to temples where prayers are held in accordance with the ceremonial rites.

The young ones will ask forgiveness from their parents before receiving their Deepavali money pockets and of course, they distribute cakes as well as sweets to the neighbours and friends and the best things is to have "open house" for their non - Hindu friend as is customary in Malaysia.

Last but not least, Happy Deepavali from Cartoola. Have an awesome one!
